A mortician sees his newest intern reading one of his old reports. From the expression on her face he notices that she appears to be confused about something, so he asks her to tell him what it is…
Intern: Sir, I don’t mean to be disrespectful, but I think that you made a mistake… This report says that four of the five victims died after being eaten by sharks. Since the police report shows that all five victims were pulled out of the water after their boat sank doesn’t it stand to reason that the fifth victim also died from those same shark attacks? Why did you say that his death was due to drowning?
Mortician: That’s easy! As a mortician, I’ve learned that sometimes you have to conduct your own research in order to solve a difficult case. To begin with, when I performed this man’s autopsy I made the startling discovery that the sharks had never touched his body.
Intern: I always thought that when a shark smells blood in the water that it always goes into a killing frenzy. If that’s true, then why would they kill everyone on that boat but this one man?
Mortician: You are correct! While I know that is true that sharks always go into a feeding frenzy whenever they smell blood, I also know that sharks seldom kill or eat their own kind. Knowing this, I had to conduct research. My research led me to believe that there was only one logical reason that the sharks did not kill this man. They didn’t kill him because they thought he was one of them.
Intern: But that doesn’t make any sense!
Mortician: Ah! But it does! You see, when I performed this man’s autopsy I realized that the sharks had allowed this man to participate in the feeding frenzy. My research also showed that there is only one logical reason that a shark tend to behave in this way. Since we know that sharks seldom kill their own kind and this man’s autopsy clearly showed that the sharks had never touched him it was only logical to believe that somehow the sharks thought that he was in fact another shark. My hypothesis was confirmed when this man’s wife told me that her husband had been an attorney before he died. As a result, I was able to conclude that the victim’s death was caused by drowning before he was able to swim safely to shore. Can you see why?
Intern: Of Course! Attorneys are like sharks. When they see or smell blood it drives them into a feeding frenzy. But sir, I still don’t understand why you said that he drowned?
Mortician: Laughing! He drowned because he couldn’t stop himself from joining in the feeding frenzy. You would think that even an attorney would realize that it is never safe to swim after eating a full course meal.
