Can you use a mechanical pencil or do they only allow normal sharpened pencils. If not, how many pencils can you bring? is there a sharpener to use? Can you bring your own sharpener to use frequently?

I know, i probably sound like a total geek. I'm just easily distracted and I would waste time thinking about the un-sharp tip of my pencil and then remembering the pencil sharpeners they used in elementary school with the multiple size holes, and then remember Scott who used to sharpen his pencil all the time just because he was bored and suddenly I realize what I'm doing and OOOPS there went a whole minute.

Basically, the fewer distractions or annoyances, the better for me, so I'm curious.

You can bring as many #2, NON-mechanical pencils as you wish. 5 should do it. You can also bring a sharpener. I'm not sure how one can cheat with a mechanical pencil, but it's no doubt possible!

Poor Scott. No, geek away. Whatever lets you keep your flow flowing . . . And if you find yourself spinning into some mental metacognitive chatter, it can be helpful to read to yourself (so quietly that nobody, not even you, hears you).

The issue with mechanical pencils relates to another question on this section of the forum: removing pages, or parts of pages, from the test. Mechanical pencils are, essentially, opaque tubes. If one had two dozen mechanical pencils, one could roll up and insert pages of the test into the tubes, and remove them from the test facility. Same reason they require liquids in clear plastic bottles, I believe.

That would require an AMAZING amount of dexterity to roll up a sheet of paper and shove it into a mechanical pencil!

Thanks for the additional explanation, superfilms
